Behind the Scenes: Delivering the First Fully 4K Survival Show for Discovery Channel
When Beachhouse Pictures in Singapore came to us with the season finale of Ed Stafford: First Man Out, they did not have a simple brief. They wanted to pit extreme explorer Ed Stafford against a world-class survival expert in a race across the rugged, high-altitude passes of the Dhauladhar Range.
The catch? It was the first survival series to be shot entirely in high-resolution 4K, requiring massive data pipelines, multiple camera units, and over a ton of fragile equipment that had to be transported deep into roadless mountain territory.
As the local production service company, we handled all permissions and high-altitude logistics to ensure a smooth, professional shoot. For national permits, our team worked closely with a professional film fixer in India to secure all necessary government clearances.
The Logistical Challenge
To support two competing units moving quickly through extreme terrain, we had to build a complete, self-sustaining production base :
-
The Mobile Base Camp: We established a central production hub inside a remote Forest Rest House, deploying portable generators to power sensitive DIT stations and recharge massive battery blocks in freezing temperatures.
-
The Mountain Crew: We mobilized a team of over 80 mountain-hardened staff, safety marshals, and porters to safely move a ton of gear across steep ridges.
-
Dynamic Schedules: In survival television, situations change constantly. We adapted our plans daily to keep pace with the action, managing backup and emergency medical teams on standby.
Direct Client Endorsement
"From permissions to logistics, India is not a simple place to shoot and they make it a painless process. They also did a great job moving their schedule to fit in with plans that kept shifting for a thousand reasons—working round the clock to ensure all was delivered on time and up to a very demanding specification."
